Out of the lab and into the limelight
Behind the scenes at The Field Museum

Nine :90 videos connect scientists with museum visitors.

The Field Museum of Chicago exists to study, preserve and educate the public about biological and cultural diversity. As such, it is both a museum and a research institution. But while its exhibits present a very public face to visitors, most of the institution's research work happens out in the field, or on curatorial floors of the museum that visitors only rarely see.

To help connect its scientific mission with the public, the museum declared September, 2003 through May, 2004 "The Year of Biodiversity and Conservation." It scheduled public lectures, laboratory tours, and outreach programs to bring its scientists out of their labs or in from the field and into contact with visitors. Along with these public programs, the museum hired Angle Park to produce nine profiles of Field Museum scientists, centered around the theme of biodiversity and conservation. These profiles are delivered via a DVD kiosk in the museum's main hall.

Kelly Luchtman produced and directed the interviews. Martin lit, shot, and edited. Along with Martin, Liz animated.

The museum's collections are vast, with specimen collected as far back as the 19th Century.

Kelly and Martin collaborated closely with each scientist to help them tell the story of how their work contributes to conservation and biodiversity.

The museum's scientists opened their labs and collections to our crew.

These videos show how science at the Field Museum is an active, hands-on endeavor.

Many, many, mollusks.
